Part 2: My son h.i.t me 30 times in front of his wife… so the next morning, while he sat in his office, I sold the house he thought was his.

"He's here."

I looked at the camera.

A black car had stopped near the gate.

A man stepped out.

He wore a dark suit.

For one terrible moment, I thought it was Malcolm.

Then he moved beneath the security light.

And I recognized him.

Daniel Pierce.

My attorney.

***

I stood motionless.

Daniel walked toward Kristen.

They exchanged a few words.

She shook her head.

Then hurried to her car.

Daniel waited until she drove away before pressing the intercom.

"Gloria?"

His voice was calm.

Familiar.

The same voice that had reassured me after Trevor's assault.

The same man who had told me to secure my records.

Who'd helped me sell River Oaks.

Who'd encouraged me to report the fraud.

I stared at him through the camera.

"What are you doing here?"

He smiled.

"Kristen called me. She sounded upset."

My stomach tightened.

"How did she get your number?"

Daniel hesitated.
