Part 2: My son h.i.t me 30 times in front of his wife… so the next morning, while he sat in his office, I sold the house he thought was his.

"We've located part of the missing six million."

My heart quickened.

"How much?"

"Approximately four million eight hundred thousand dollars remains in an account that's now subject to restrictions while the investigation proceeds."

I closed my eyes.

It wasn't all the money.

But it was something.

"And the rest?"

"We're tracing additional transfers."

Then she hesitated.

"Mrs. Sutter, there's another development."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"We reviewed communications between Malcolm and Kristen."

I sat straighter.

"And?"

"Some messages suggest they expected you to transfer controlling interests in Cedarline voluntarily."

I stared at the wall.

"Why would they think I'd do that?"

Grant paused.

"Because they believed they could create circumstances that would make you afraid of what happened if you refused."

My hands began trembling.

"Like Trevor attacking me?"

"We're investigating whether anyone encouraged or anticipated that violence."

I covered my mouth.

The memory returned.

Trevor standing over me.

Kristen watching.
