Part 2: I had surgery to restore my sight after 20 years of blindness, even though my husband begged me not to — the moment I opened my eyes and saw him, I finally understood why.

And that was something we'd never truly done before.

Nigel continued working as an eye surgeon.

The hospital reviewed the circumstances of his involvement in my care, including the conflicts created by our marriage and the undisclosed childhood connection.

He cooperated with the review and accepted professional recommendations about boundaries and independent oversight.

He also continued supporting research into treatment for complex visual injuries.

But his work no longer consumed every moment of his life.

He began coming home for dinner.

He attended Iris's school performances.

He took Leo to the park.

And when I needed help with visual rehabilitation, he asked whether I wanted his assistance instead of assuming he knew what was best.

It seemed like such a small change.

But it meant everything.

One evening, I found him sitting on the living-room floor, helping Leo build a castle from wooden blocks.

I watched from the doorway.

Nigel looked up.
