"Mara, I helped so many children."
I felt anger burn through my grief.
"Using money meant for me?"
She looked desperate.
"I thought I could turn what happened into something good."
I shook my head.
**"You don't get to hurt your daughter and then use her suffering to make yourself look generous."**
Mom flinched.
I was crying so hard I could barely breathe.
She stepped toward me.
"Mara, please."
I backed away.
"No."
"Sweetheart—"
"Don't call me that right now."
Her face crumpled.
I looked directly into her eyes.
For twenty years, I'd wondered what her face looked like.
I'd imagined kindness.
Comfort.
Safety.
Now I was seeing fear.
Shame.
And the terrible realization that her daughter finally knew the truth.
"Mom, I loved you."
She sobbed.
"I love you too."
I shook my head.
**"Then you should have protected me when I couldn't protect myself."**
I asked her to leave.
