Part 2: I had surgery to restore my sight after 20 years of blindness, even though my husband begged me not to — the moment I opened my eyes and saw him, I finally understood why.

The crescent-shaped scar above his left eyebrow was impossible to ignore.

I had traced that scar with my fingers many times during our marriage.

Back then, he'd told me it came from a childhood accident.

That much had been true.

What he hadn't told me was that I had been there.

I looked at him.

"Nigel, did you know about the Lumen Project?"

He shook his head.

"Not until your father showed me some of the records six months ago."

"Did you tell him who you really were?"

"Yes."

I felt anger rise.

"And you both decided I didn't need to know."

He lowered his gaze.

"I knew I had to tell you."

"Then why didn't you?"

"Because every time I tried, I imagined you looking at me the way you're looking at me now."

My throat tightened.

"And what way is that?"

"Like you don't know who I am."
