Part 2: I had surgery to restore my sight after 20 years of blindness, even though my husband begged me not to — the moment I opened my eyes and saw him, I finally understood why.

The man whose signature appeared beneath the medical record.

He had spent years helping the boy who had caused my accident develop the surgery that finally restored my vision.

I couldn't understand it.

I couldn't understand any of it.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Nigel began crying.

"Because I knew that once you discovered who I was, you'd question everything. And I was terrified of losing you."

I looked toward the sky.

For the first time in twenty years, I could see the sun setting.

It was beautiful.

And I hated that I couldn't enjoy it.

Then Nigel whispered:

"Mara, your father asked me to give you something if the surgery succeeded."

"What?"

"A sealed box containing the original evidence from your childhood treatment."

My heart nearly stopped.

"Where is it?"

Nigel hesitated.

Then he said:

**"Your father told me that if you ever saw what was inside, you'd understand why he warned the hospital not to tell your mother."**
