Part 2: I had surgery to restore my sight after 20 years of blindness, even though my husband begged me not to — the moment I opened my eyes and saw him, I finally understood why.

Now my mother was using them too.

And somehow, everyone who claimed to protect me had decided that keeping secrets was part of the job.

"Mom, there's something else."

I handed her the medical report.

She took it.

Then her expression changed completely.

Her face went pale.

For several seconds, she stared at the paper without moving.

"Where did you get this?"

"Dr. Harris found my original records."

Her fingers tightened around the document.

"Those records should have been destroyed."

I went still.

"What?"

Mom looked up sharply.

"I mean, they're twenty years old. I thought the hospital disposed of old files."

I stared at her.

"Why would you assume that?"

She looked away.

"Because hospitals have retention policies."

I watched her carefully.

For the first time in my life, I could see the expression on her face when she lied.

Her voice remained gentle.

But her eyes had changed.
