Part 2: I had surgery to restore my sight after 20 years of blindness, even though my husband begged me not to — the moment I opened my eyes and saw him, I finally understood why.

And apparently, that wasn't the only secret surrounding my blindness.

Dr. Harris stood beside my bed, holding a folder filled with old medical records.

He was a tall, gray-haired man with an expression that made me think he had spent many years delivering difficult news.

"Mara," he said gently, "I need you to understand that these records are incomplete. We shouldn't draw conclusions before reviewing them properly."

I looked at the photograph in my hands.

It showed two medical images taken shortly after my childhood accident.

Even with my newly restored vision, I could see they were different.

"What am I looking at?"

"The first image was taken when you arrived at the hospital after your fall. The second was taken approximately eighteen hours later."

I swallowed.

"And?"

Dr. Harris hesitated.

"The first examination describes serious trauma, particularly to your left eye. But the documentation suggests there was still measurable function in your right eye."
