Part 2: I had surgery to restore my sight after 20 years of blindness, even though my husband begged me not to — the moment I opened my eyes and saw him, I finally understood why.

I shook my head.

"Just find my daughter."

He swallowed.

"The police located Dr. Ellis."

"And?"

"She claims Charles Rowan isn't the person directing the new program."

I stared at him.

"Then who is?"

Detective Collins looked toward Nigel.

His face was pale.

"The person funding the current research is someone who has been involved in your life for years."

I felt a coldness spreading through my body.

"Who?"

He hesitated.

Then he turned his phone toward me.

On the screen was a photograph from a recent meeting of the Rowan Vision Institute.

Charles Rowan sat at one end of a long conference table.

Dr. Ellis sat beside him.

And at the head of the table sat a woman.

A woman with familiar brown eyes.

A woman whose face I had seen for the very first time only two days earlier.

A woman who had held me while I cried about my blindness for twenty years.
