My hands tightened around the report.
"Then what happened?"
He turned another page.
"Your left eye had been badly injured in the fall. But your right eye was still responding normally during the initial examination."
I stared at him.
"Both my eyes were blind when I woke up."
"Yes."
"How?"
Dr. Harris hesitated.
"Several hours after your admission, you were taken into a treatment room for an additional procedure."
"What procedure?"
"That's what I'm trying to determine. The records are incomplete."
He showed me two photographs.
The first had been taken shortly after my accident.
The second was dated almost six hours later.
Even with my newly restored vision, I could see the difference.
My eyes looked swollen and severely damaged in the second photograph.
"The medical notes describe a chemical injury affecting both corneas," he explained.
My heart began pounding.
"A chemical injury?"
"Yes. The records mention exposure to a solution that shouldn't have caused that degree of damage if it had been used properly."
