Part 2: I had surgery to restore my sight after 20 years of blindness, even though my husband begged me not to — the moment I opened my eyes and saw him, I finally understood why.

But I remembered Lily saying something strange.

"The doctor knows Daddy."

I had asked what she meant.

Lily said the doctor had worked with Nigel a long time ago.

I hadn't thought about it again.

Until now.

I took out my phone and called my mother.

"Mom, is Lily with you?"

"Yes, sweetheart. Both children are here."

I exhaled.

"Can I speak to her?"

A moment later, Lily's cheerful voice filled my ear.

"Mommy!"

I nearly cried.

"Hi, beautiful girl."

"Grandma says your eyes are getting better!"

"They are, sweetheart."

"Can you see rainbows now?"

I smiled through my tears.

"I can."

She giggled.

Then I asked:

"Lily, do you remember the doctor who visited your school?"

"Dr. Ellis?"

My heart stopped.

"Yes. What did she do?"

"She looked at our eyes with a little light."

"Anything else?"

"She took some pictures."

"What kind of pictures?"

"Of my eyes. She said they were special."
