Part 2: I had surgery to restore my sight after 20 years of blindness, even though my husband begged me not to — the moment I opened my eyes and saw him, I finally understood why.

At the familiar eyes.

At the face I'd once believed I could never forgive myself for loving.

Then I leaned forward and kissed him.

When I pulled back, he was crying.

"Yes," I whispered.

His breath caught.

"Yes?"

I nodded.

**"But never ask me to live in the dark again just because you're afraid of what I'll see."**

He pulled me gently into his arms.

"I won't."

And this time, I believed he understood what the promise meant.

### TWO YEARS AFTER THE SURGERY

On the second anniversary of the day I regained my sight, we had a small celebration in our backyard.

June came with her husband.

Her vision remained limited, and she continued using the tools and skills that had helped her long before treatment.

But she could now perceive more light and some large shapes under certain conditions.
