Part 2: I had surgery to restore my sight after 20 years of blindness, even though my husband begged me not to — the moment I opened my eyes and saw him, I finally understood why.

I looked at his painting and laughed.

"Sweetheart, why is the grass purple?"

He shrugged.

"Because I like purple."

I smiled.

"That's a very good reason."

Then my phone rang.

June.

I answered immediately.

"Hello?"

Her voice trembled.

"Mara?"

My heartbeat quickened.

"June? Are you okay?"

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then she began crying.

I stood.

"June?"

She laughed through her tears.

"I saw something today."

My hand flew to my mouth.

"What?"

"A window."

I closed my eyes.

June continued.

"It was blurry. The doctors say we still have to see how much useful vision I can recover. But I could tell where the light was coming from."

Tears streamed down my cheeks.

"Oh, June."

"I saw the window, Mara."

I began sobbing.

She laughed.

"I know that sounds ridiculous."

"No!"

I shook my head.

"No, it doesn't."

She took a shaky breath.

"I stood there for almost ten minutes, staring at the shape of the light."
