Part 2: I had surgery to restore my sight after 20 years of blindness, even though my husband begged me not to — the moment I opened my eyes and saw him, I finally understood why.

We sat in a quiet consultation room.

When she saw me, she began crying.

"I remember you."

I studied her face.

Of course, I had no visual memory of her.

But her voice stirred something deep inside me.

A soft voice.

A woman humming.

A hand brushing hair away from my forehead.

"Were you my nurse?" I asked.

She nodded.

"You were such a brave little girl."

I swallowed.

"Please tell me what happened."

Evelyn looked toward Dr. Harris.

Then she lowered her voice.

"The playground fall injured your left eye. The doctors were concerned about infection and scarring, but nobody told us you would lose sight in both eyes."

My heart pounded.

"What happened afterward?"

"Dr. Rowan arrived."

Nigel's father.

"He ordered a treatment that wasn't part of our usual protocol."

"What kind of treatment?"

"A new solution intended to reduce inflammation and support healing. It was part of a research program."
