Part 2: I discovered my husband was having an affair with my best friend while we were all on the same airplane—and neither of them knew I was there. Instead of confronting them, I sent a small, beautifully wrapped gift to their seats.

Then came Oliver's seventh birthday.

Dawson held it at a park.

Dinosaurs.

Pizza.

Too much blue frosting.

All of us were invited.

Even Judith, under clear instructions not to discuss trust funds at children's parties.

She behaved.

Mostly.

I almost didn't go.

Then Max said:

“Mom, he's my brother.”

Of course.

So we went.

Oliver ran toward Max.

Then Sophie.

Then Ethan.

He hesitated when he reached me.

He knew who I was.

Sort of.

Children build family maps differently than adults.

He looked at my wrist.

I was wearing a silver bracelet.

Not Ryan's anniversary bracelet.

That one was gone.

The friendship bracelet Megan had given me years ago—

the one I sent to the plane seats—

had been returned to me during the divorce.

I had repaired it.

Not because Megan and I were restored.

Because I no longer wanted betrayal to own every object that had existed before it.
