Sophie knelt.
“Hi.”
Oliver hid behind Dawson.
Ethan remained farther back.
Then Oliver looked at Ryan.
“Daddy?”
Ryan cried.
“Yes.”
Ethan's face changed.
He had spent weeks furious at Ryan.
Now he watched a four-year-old call the same man Dad.
The anger remained.
But it had to make room.
Later, Ethan said to me:
“I hate what Dad did.”
“I know.”
“But Oliver didn't do anything.”
“No.”
“Can he come to my graduation someday?”
I cried.
“If you want him there.”
“Yeah.”
He nodded.
“I think I do.”
That was our first happy thing.
Small.
Real.
CHAPTER 7 — LENA LEFT ONE FINAL VIDEO FOR OLIVER, AND WHAT SHE SAID ABOUT RYAN MADE ME STOP SEEING HER AS “THE OTHER WOMAN”
Nora Price called six months after the plane.
“Claire, Lena left a video.”
I stared at the phone.
“For Oliver?”
“Yes.”
“Why call me?”
“Because there is a section addressed to you.”
