Part 2: I discovered my husband was having an affair with my best friend while we were all on the same airplane—and neither of them knew I was there. Instead of confronting them, I sent a small, beautifully wrapped gift to their seats.

“Yes.”

At least she did not defend it.

Then:

“I think I wanted to understand why she had chosen him.”

That sentence stopped me.

Megan cried harder.

“I know how horrible that sounds.”

“It does.”

“I spent my whole life being the responsible sister.”

“Lena was impulsive.”

“Then she died and left this child.”

“I took care of him.”

“Ryan appeared.”

“And every time I looked at him, I thought, this is the man who created the biggest secret in my sister's life.”

“So you made him yours.”

Megan whispered:

“Yes.”

No moral equation could make that reasonable.

Human?

Maybe.

Still destructive.

Then Nora Price arrived.

Short woman.

Gray suit.

Briefcase.

She looked at all four of us.

“This is exactly the gathering I hoped to avoid.”

I almost laughed.

She held up a document.

“Ryan, did you file a motion today seeking emergency temporary custody of Oliver?”

Ryan went pale.
