Part 2: I discovered my husband was having an affair with my best friend while we were all on the same airplane—and neither of them knew I was there. Instead of confronting them, I sent a small, beautifully wrapped gift to their seats.

His face crumpled.

“Yes.”

“Was the plane a business trip?”

“No.”

“Chicago?”

“We were meeting a family-law attorney.”

Dawson snapped:

“Together?”

Ryan looked at him.

“We were trying to determine what would happen with Oliver.”

“By kissing in business class?”

No answer.

I pulled the mortgage application from Dawson's folder.

“Is this my signature?”

Ryan stared.

“Claire—”

“Is it?”

“No.”

“Did you sign it?”

His mouth moved.

Nothing.

“Did you cause someone to sign it?”

“Yes.”

The word landed quietly.

I felt a strange calm.

“What exactly did you think would happen?”

Ryan rubbed both hands over his face.

“The lender wanted spousal acknowledgment because of the way my company debt is structured.”

“So instead of telling your wife you were purchasing a secret condo with her best friend…”

“I signed for you.”

“You forged me into your affair.”

His face broke.

“Yes.”

Dawson turned away.

Maybe to keep from hitting him.
