Part 2: I discovered my husband was having an affair with my best friend while we were all on the same airplane—and neither of them knew I was there. Instead of confronting them, I sent a small, beautifully wrapped gift to their seats.

Nora said:

“Claire, I sent that photograph because I needed you to understand one thing before Ryan reached you.”

“What?”

“Oliver is innocent.”

I closed my eyes.

“I know.”

“Good.”

“Because when this becomes public, adults are going to start arguing over who owns him.”

“No child survives that language well.”

Then Nora said something I did not understand until much later.

“Lena knew Ryan might eventually try.”
CHAPTER 4 — RYAN SAID HE BOUGHT THE CONDO FOR HIS SON. THEN I SHOWED HIM THE MORTGAGE APPLICATION WITH MY FORGED SIGNATURE

Ryan came to the hospital that evening.

Not because I invited him.

Because Mom's room number had been in our family calendar.

When I saw him step out of the elevator, every part of my body reacted.

For eighteen years, that face meant home.

Now I saw the man from seat 2A.

The man kissing Megan.

The man who had another child.
