Part 2: I discovered my husband was having an affair with my best friend while we were all on the same airplane—and neither of them knew I was there. Instead of confronting them, I sent a small, beautifully wrapped gift to their seats.

"Claire Bennett, don't insult my intelligence."

Despite everything, I almost smiled.

Then she noticed Dawson crying.

Her expression softened.

"Dawson, sweetheart, come here."

He rose unsteadily and approached her bed.

Mom took his hand.

She'd known him for fifteen years. He was practically another son to her.

"What is it?"

Dawson tried to speak.

Couldn't.

Finally, he held out the photograph.

Mom studied it.

Her face changed.

"Where did you get this?"

My heartbeat quickened.

"Someone sent it to me."

She looked again.

Then whispered, "I saw that child yesterday."

I froze.

"What?"

"Here. At the hospital."

Dawson gripped the side of her bed.

"Are you sure?"

Mom nodded.

"He was sitting outside the cardiology department with a woman. He dropped a little blue dinosaur."

She swallowed.

"I picked it up for him. He thanked me."

My hands began shaking.

"Was the woman Megan?"

"No. She was older. Maybe in her fifties."
