Part 2: Before my husband passed away, he asked me to deliver a sealed letter to a woman I'd never met — after she read the first line, she looked at me and asked, "Did he tell you everything?"

She paused.

“…was a man who loved us and lied to us.”

Some guests looked surprised.

Good.

No polished mythology.

Emily continued.

“I don't say that to dishonor him.”

“I say it because I don't want love used as an eraser.”

My chest broke open.

Then:

“He was my dad.”

“He was also wrong.”

“Both are true.”

There it was again.

Our family's new language.

Both.

After the wedding, life became quieter.

Blessedly.

Catherine and Rebecca settled into neighboring apartments.

Not the same building.

Apparently six blocks was the correct distance for reunited mother and daughter.

Emily and Nathan had a baby girl two years later.

They named her Clara.

Not Grace.

Not Rebecca.

Not Catherine.

Not after any secret.

Her own name.

When Clara was born, Emily asked me to be in the room.

Rebecca came later.

By invitation.

No one switched babies.

No altered records.

No whispered decisions in hallways.
