Part 2: Before my husband passed away, he asked me to deliver a sealed letter to a woman I'd never met — after she read the first line, she looked at me and asked, "Did he tell you everything?"

Not the truth.

He should have given us that decades earlier.

The final gift was stopping the excuses.
CHAPTER 8 — AT EMILY’S WEDDING, SHE ASKED THREE WOMEN TO STAND WITH HER, AND FOR THE FIRST TIME NO ONE HAD TO DISAPPEAR SO SOMEONE ELSE COULD BE HER MOTHER

Four years after Zane died, Emily got married.

Not quickly because of our family revelations.

She had already been dating Nathan for two years when Zane became ill.

Nathan survived the entire truth earthquake with remarkable restraint.

The first time Emily told him:

“My biological mother is alive.”

he reportedly said:

“Okay.”

Then:

“My legal mother gave birth to a different baby.”

“Less okay.”

Then:

“My father knew.”

Nathan sat down.

Sensibly.

He became family mostly because he never tried to fix anything.

He listened.

Brought sandwiches.

Learned everyone's names.

Excellent qualifications.

The wedding was at an old garden estate.

Rebecca had recovered enough to walk without her cane for short distances.
