Part 2: Before my husband passed away, he asked me to deliver a sealed letter to a woman I'd never met — after she read the first line, she looked at me and asked, "Did he tell you everything?"

If she says no, that does not make her cruel.

Grief is not permission to choose for her.

Rebecca looked at me.

“I meant that.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

Then the final paragraph:

And if Claire says yes, tell her this:

She is not borrowing my daughter.

If she becomes your mother, let her be your mother without apology.

Just don't erase me to make that easier.

Emily could not continue.

I took the letter.

The last line:

There should be room in one child's life for every person who truly loves her.

I put the page down.

Then turned toward Helen.

“Did Zane read this?”

“Yes.”

“Before we left the hospital?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know Rebecca expected me to be told?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know she wasn't permanently surrendering Emily?”

“Yes.”

Every answer closed another door on the version of Zane I had loved.

Emily whispered:

“Mom.”

I cried.
