He delayed.
Again.
“He was terrified of telling you.”
Rebecca said to me.
“He loved you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“I know.”
She understood the bitterness.
“He was also a coward.”
“Yes.”
Both.
Then Emily asked:
“Who is my biological father?”
The question changed Rebecca's face.
“Owen.”
Silence.
“Is he alive?”
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.”
“Do you know where?”
“Yes.”
“Does he know about me?”
Rebecca's answer surprised us all.
“No.”
Emily exhaled.
“Do I have to tell him?”
“No.”
Rebecca said.
“Never.”
“Do you want me to?”
“No.”
Catherine said the same.
I did too.
Then stopped.
I had just promised Emily the choice was hers.
I corrected:
“I don't want you to.”
She looked at me.
“But?”
“But you decide.”
She nodded.
We were learning.
Slowly.
Rebecca then looked at me.
“There's something else.”
Of course.
I almost laughed.
“What?”
“When Zane found me, I made him do a DNA test.”
