Part 2: Before my husband passed away, he asked me to deliver a sealed letter to a woman I'd never met — after she read the first line, she looked at me and asked, "Did he tell you everything?"

But she interrupted.

"Mom, please. You need to see this."

The call ended.

When I reached Catherine's house, the front door stood open.

Emily was in the living room.

Julia sat beside her.

Both looked frightened.

Catherine stood near the fireplace, holding a small cassette recorder.

I stopped in the doorway.

"What's happened?"

Emily looked at me.

"Rebecca gave this to Catherine years ago."

I stared at the recorder.

It was old.

Silver.

A crack ran across the plastic cover.

Catherine's hands trembled.

"Henry mailed it to me shortly before the accident. I never knew there was a tape inside until Rebecca described the recorder yesterday."

I swallowed.

"What is it?"

Catherine pressed PLAY.

Static filled the room.

Then a man's voice spoke.

Henry Hale.

"Rebecca, if you hear this, I want you to know I'm coming."

My heart tightened.

He continued.

"I found the man who helped Voss take you away."
