"Mom?"
I stood.
She hurried toward me.
"What's wrong?"
I took her hands.
"Something happened before you were born. Before we brought you home."
She frowned.
I explained what Catherine had found.
The old photograph.
Rebecca's disappearance.
The hospital records.
The DNA comparison.
At first, Emily didn't speak.
Then she sat down slowly.
"You're saying you didn't give birth to me?"
My eyes filled.
"I gave birth to a baby. But there's evidence that you were another woman's child."
She stared at me.
"Does Dad know?"
I nodded.
"Yes."
Her expression changed.
"How long?"
I swallowed.
"He's known something was wrong since the day you were born."
Emily stood abruptly.
"No."
I reached toward her.
"Sweetheart—"
She stepped back.
"Every birthday?"
My heart broke.
"Emily..."
"Every birthday, he knew?"
I couldn't answer.
She covered her mouth.
Then whispered, "Who am I?"
I began crying.
She looked at me.
"Mom, who am I?"
