Part 2: Before my husband passed away, he asked me to deliver a sealed letter to a woman I'd never met — after she read the first line, she looked at me and asked, "Did he tell you everything?"

"Did our baby die?" I whispered.

Zane looked devastated.

"I don't know."

The kitchen seemed to tilt.

"What?"

He began shaking his head.

"They told me she did. But I never saw her."

I gripped the counter.

"Did they show you a death certificate?"

"Yes."

"Did you see her body?"

He lowered his eyes.

"No."

My throat tightened.

"Then how could you let them take her?"

Zane began sobbing.

"Because Voss told me the other baby would be placed somewhere dangerous if I refused."

I stared at him.

"What other baby?"

"Rebecca's."

My stomach turned.

He continued.

"Her child was being kept through a private maternity organization. Voss said I could give her a safe home."

I shook my head.

"Why us?"

Zane's expression changed.

"Because he knew about Henry."

I stopped breathing.

"Catherine's husband?"

He nodded.

"I'd been with Henry the night he died. I knew he was searching for Rebecca. I had documents he gave me before the ambulance arrived."
