Parents, be careful – my daughter just ran inside crying so hard she couldn’t even speak. I assumed something had scared her, so I went outside to find this fella hanging around the backyard. This is the second time now. Does anyone know how to keep them away?

Avoid combining commercial repellents with homemade chemicals.

Why Smell Alone Usually Isn’t Enough

This is the part many viral snake-deterrent articles leave out.

A snake does not enter a property because it enjoys the smell of your garden. It usually has a reason.

It may be looking for:

Food

Water

Shelter

A place to regulate body temperature

A quiet nesting or resting area

Rodents or other prey

Frogs, lizards, or insects

An easy route through the landscape

If those resources are available, a strong smell may not be enough to make the property unattractive.

For example, imagine a garage with a gap underneath the door and a large rodent population inside.

You could surround the building with peppermint, garlic, cinnamon, and citrus.

But if mice continue providing a food source and the snake can easily enter, the underlying problem remains.

Removing the attraction is generally more important than creating a smell.
