Parents, be careful – my daughter just ran inside crying so hard she couldn’t even speak. I assumed something had scared her, so I went outside to find this fella hanging around the backyard. This is the second time now. Does anyone know how to keep them away?

The Bottom Line
The idea of using a strong scent to keep snakes away is appealing because it sounds simple, inexpensive, and natural. Peppermint, cinnamon, clove, garlic, onion, lemongrass, citronella, vinegar, citrus, eucalyptus, rosemary, and commercial repellent products are all commonly discussed as possible deterrents.

But there is an important distinction between a smell that snakes may dislike and a method proven to keep snakes away.

No household scent should be treated as a guaranteed snake-proof barrier.

If snakes repeatedly appear around your home, the more effective long-term approach is to understand why they are there in the first place. Removing food sources, reducing shelter, managing vegetation, eliminating unnecessary water, and sealing openings can address the conditions that actually attract or allow snakes onto your property.

And if you do encounter one, keeping your distance is usually far more important than trying to overpower it with a homemade remedy.

Sometimes, the simplest solution isn’t finding the strongest smell.
