Our daughter's twin di3d at nine days old and we let her believe she was born alone — at her eighteenth my husband carried something out of the garage and said he had started it the night her sister died.

And she said: "Mum. You couldn't say her name. I watched you not say it for four years on purpose."

Fourteen years old, and she looked at her mother and did the same arithmetic her father had been doing since 2007, and came to the same answer, and then sat on it for four years to keep me comfortable.

Three people in one house, each of them not saying something for the sake of the other two.

And I was the reason. Not Russ. Not her. Me.

And the thing about that party.

She knew. She had known for four years.

And when her father put that chest down in front of her and told her she had a sister, she gave him the face he needed.

She let that man have it. She sat there at eighteen years old and let him tell her a thing she had known since she was fourteen, and she did not say "I know," because she could see what it had cost him to get there.
