Robert stood motionless.
“Margaret, you’ve misunderstood everything.”
“I saw it myself! He begged you to stop!”
Robert lowered himself into a chair without answering.
I was about to leave with Ben when something near the wall caught my attention.
It was a small wooden structure with two supporting rails. The floor was covered with a soft mat, and colorful toys lay scattered around.
On the wall hung a large sheet of paper.
“BEN’S FIRST TEN STEPS.”
Below it were handwritten notes.
“Monday: Three steps.”
“Tuesday: Five steps.”
“Thursday: Seven steps.”
I turned toward Robert.
“What is all this?”
Before he could answer, Ben gently tugged my hand.
“Grandma, I wanted to walk for you.”

I froze.
Ben had been born with a condition that made controlling his legs difficult. Despite years of treatment and physical therapy, he still struggled with his balance.
