My Son's Best Friend Wore a Red Dress to His Funeral—My Husband Tried to Throw Him Out, Until He Revealed Our Son's Final Wish

Caleb's expression changed.

For a moment, I thought he might cry.

Then he smiled.

“I hope so.”

I took his hand.

“He would have been.”

Caleb went to college to study social work.

He told me he wanted to help young people who had difficult lives at home.

I thought about the three Christmases he'd spent with us.

How he'd quietly stayed after dinner.

How Ethan always made room for him.

I wondered how much my son had understood about Caleb's struggles before the adults did.

One evening, Caleb called from his dorm.

“Mrs. Bennett?”

“Yes?”

“Can I ask you something?”

“Anything.”

He hesitated.

“Do you think Ethan knew how much he helped me?”

My eyes filled.

“I think he knew you loved him.”

Caleb was quiet.

Then whispered:

“He was the reason I got through some really bad years.”

I took a breath.

“Then I'm glad our home was there for you.”
