My son crossed the graduation stage wearing a bright red dress as hundreds of people laughed. I was the only person in the auditorium who knew why.

We graduated, Mom. Both of us. Together.

Both of them. Together.

I held the photograph. I looked at the red dress hanging in the closet. I looked at the paintings on the wall. I listened to the house settle around me with the particular sound a house makes when it holds the evidence of someone who lived there fully and brightly and without apology.

Lily was here. In the color on the walls. In the dress in the closet. In the pocket she had sewn. In the promise her brother kept.

The room was quiet. The dress was vermillion. The photograph was in my hands.

And it was more than enough.
