I bought it outright two years ago.
After I sold my share of a software company I’d spent twelve exhausting years building.
The company was called Tidewater Systems. Logistics software for regional shipping companies. My college roommate and I started it in a one-bedroom apartment in Durham in 2011. We wrote the first version on two used laptops. We ate ramen for three years. I slept four hours a night for most of my twenties.
By 2022, we had ninety employees and contracts with forty port authorities on the East Coast.

When a company from Atlanta bought us out, my share came to a number I still have trouble saying out loud.
I didn’t buy a yacht. I didn’t buy a Lamborghini. I didn’t move to Manhattan.
I bought this house.
No mortgage. No partners. No one else’s name on the deed.

Just mine.
The house was everything my childhood hadn’t been.
