“No, Mother, you accomplished that yourself.”
“You’re choosing a worthless garage worker over the family that raised you?”
“I’m choosing my husband and my son over a woman who thinks a birthday program matters more than breathing.”
The silence that followed felt almost unnatural.
Then David leaned toward the phone.
“Good evening, Eleanor.”
Her response came immediately.
“Oh, marvelous, the mechanic has decided to involve himself in a conversation between educated people.”
David’s expression did not change.
“My name is David, and I believe you’re familiar with Vanguard Alpha Capital.”
“Of course I’m familiar with Vanguard Alpha, you fool, because they’re one of the most powerful investment firms in the country.”
“Then you might want to ask your financial advisers who founded it.”
She laughed so loudly that I pulled the phone farther from Leo.
“Are you seriously pretending to be some billionaire now, David?”
