My voice shook.
“But I’m still here, and I’m not going anywhere.”
David pulled a chair beside me.
We sat together, each holding one of Leo’s hands.
After several minutes, I looked at my husband.
“I need to know everything.”
He nodded.
“About Vanguard?”
“About Vanguard, Mother’s debts, those documents, and whatever else you’ve been hiding.”
David drew a slow breath.
“All right.”
I waited until he turned his chair fully toward mine.
“Start with why a supposed mechanic controls twenty-two billion dollars.”
He glanced at his worn boots.
“I actually love fixing engines, Clara.”
Despite everything, I almost smiled.
“I know that part.”
“I founded Vanguard years before we met, but I never wanted our marriage to become another financial transaction.”
“Then why marry someone whose mother worships money?”
“Because I fell in love with a woman who cried when an injured bird landed outside our kitchen window.”
