Claire looked at him for several seconds.
“So what exactly did you promise her?”
Mark did not answer immediately.
Officer Ruiz handed the papers back to him.

The officer was not there to repair their marriage or solve Diane’s housing problem.
He had asked the questions necessary to understand why he had been called.
Diane had described herself as being locked out of a home where she already had a right to enter.
That was not what was happening on the porch.
She had arrived to move in for the first time after receiving permission from Mark, while Claire—the person whose name appeared on the ownership paperwork—was objecting to the move happening without her agreement.
The difference mattered.
Lisa slipped her phone into her pocket.
Claire noticed.
“You can keep recording,” she said.
Lisa frowned.
“I’m not recording anymore.”
“I know.”
That answer landed harder than Claire intended.
