Emma burst into tears and hugged him.
The gymnasium erupted in applause.
But Grandpa raised his hand.
“Hold on! We still haven’t finished our walk!”
Everyone laughed through their tears.
Mike returned the cane, took Emma’s other arm, and together the three walked toward center court.
Grandpa on one side.
Mike on the other.
Emma between them.
When they reached the center, Emma picked up her red rose.
I thought she’d give it to Mike.
But she turned toward my father.
“Grandpa, you showed me what keeping a promise means.”
She placed the rose in his hand.
Then she looked at Mike.
“And you have a lifetime to prove you meant what you said.”
Mike nodded.
“I know, sweetheart.”
That evening didn’t magically repair everything.
For weeks, Emma remained cautious. Mike understood that one public apology couldn’t erase her pain.
Instead of making more promises, he began keeping them.
