When I called and explained what had happened, Dad said only one thing.

Emma hurried toward him and took his arm.
Together, they began walking slowly across the basketball court.
Suddenly, someone in the audience stood up.
Then another person.
Within seconds, the entire gymnasium was on its feet, applauding.
Tears streamed down my cheeks.
But at that very moment, Mike suddenly stood up.
He wasn’t clapping.
Instead, he walked down from the bleachers and headed straight toward my daughter.
When he reached them, he stopped directly in front of Grandpa and said loudly:
“George, wait a minute. Before Emma gives away that rose, everyone here deserves to know what I did nine years ago.”
