My hand found the back of a chair. I looked at my husband.
"Do you want her back?"
"I told him I wanted him back."
Mark stared at his feet for the longest time.
And the longer we stood there in silence, the more my question seemed stupid. Hadn't he already shown me the answer with the constant comparisons?

"Yes," he finally said, to the floor.
I nodded slowly. It felt like nodding at a stranger's bad news. "Then why are you still married to me?"
My question seemed stupid.
"I wasn't going to leave you pregnant," he said. "I'm not a monster. I was going to wait until after the baby was born."
"Our baby," Claire said, reaching for Mark's hand.
"Excuse me?" I said. "What's that supposed to mean?"
She smiled like I'd just asked a stupid question.
