When I was young, I believed that love meant sacrifice.
Robert always told me:
“A good wife works hard, takes care of her husband, and never complains.”
And I believed him.
For fifty years, I cleaned other people’s houses, washed their clothes, and sometimes even spent nights caring for sick strangers.
Every Friday, Robert waited for me at the door.
“Give me the money.”
I handed him my entire paycheck.
If I tried to keep even a few dollars for myself, he became furious.
“Are you stealing from me in my own house?”
Eventually, I learned to stop asking for anything.
I even needed his permission to buy myself a new pair of shoes.
We had no children.
Or rather, I believed that was simply our fate.
When I was younger, I had become pregnant once. But after giving birth, I was told that my baby hadn’t survived.
