“Neither will I.”
We sat together and discussed the difficult conversations still ahead. Patricia would need to acknowledge what she had done if she wanted a relationship with us. Arthur would need to demonstrate through his actions that our marriage could be built on honesty rather than guilt and secrecy.
Neither problem could be solved overnight.
I had never wanted to take Arthur away from his mother. I wanted to build a life with him, one in which helping family was a choice we discussed together rather than an obligation controlled by fear.
Patricia had tried to stop our wedding because she believed marriage would make her lose her son. Instead, her actions forced Arthur to confront the unhealthy dependence that had shaped his life for years.
By trying so desperately to keep him dependent on her, she finally gave him a reason to stand on his own.
