“I wish I could have known him,” I whispered.
“I wish you could have known him, too.”
When we returned home, my mother was waiting by the door, her eyes filled with tears.
That night, the three of us sat together and talked until dawn. I listened to stories about my parents’ younger years, memories of David, and all the little details they had hidden from me for so many years.
I told them that I loved them, but that I was hurt, too. I asked them never again to decide for me which truths I was ready to hear.
The following week, we returned to the same beach.
This time, my mother came with us.
Robert stood beside me and asked:
“Can I ask you something?”
“What is it?”
“One day, if you want to, come here and tell David about your life. I think he would be proud of you.”
