My Ex-Husband And His New Wife Moved Into The House I Secretly Bought Using My Private Door Code, But The Person Who Betrayed Me Was Someone I Had Trusted Completely

I sat with that for a long moment.

Then I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out a small folded square of paper. I’d been carrying it around all day, waiting for the right time.

I handed it to Lauren.

She unfolded it.

Four numbers, written in my handwriting.

“Your new code,” I said. “Just yours. Nobody else’s.”

Lauren looked at the numbers. Then she looked at me.

“Are you sure?”

I smiled.

Because she’d asked again.

And because this time, I knew exactly what my answer was, and I didn’t need anyone else to tell me.

“I’m sure,” I said. “This is my house. I decide who comes in.”

She folded the paper carefully and tucked it into her pocket, close to her heart, the way she used to keep the notes I’d slipped into her lunchbox when she was little.

Then she leaned her head back on my shoulder, and we sat together under the maple tree in the cold November dark, two women who had both learned the same hard lesson in the same strange year.
