I’d spent most of my life being the one in the hallway.
Not today.
We were on I-71 heading north by 10:40.
At 10:52, my phone rang. A number I didn’t recognize, with an Ohio area code.
“Is this Diane Whitaker?”
“Yes.”
“This is Officer Daniel Hale with the township police. I’m standing outside your property right now. I’ve got two adults here, a man and a woman, who say they have permission to live at this address.”
“They don’t.”
“I understand that’s your position, ma’am. I want to be straight with you, because this can get complicated. The gentleman has shown me a document. It’s a residential lease agreement, and it appears to have your signature on it.”
The car went very quiet.
Rachel’s hands tightened on the steering wheel.
“My signature,” I repeated.
“Yes, ma’am. Month-to-month lease. Rent listed as four hundred dollars a month. Signed by a Diane Whitaker as landlord and a Mark Whitaker and Vanessa Whitaker as tenants.”
