“I haven’t spoken to you since January.”
“You called me in September.”
“I didn’t.”
“You’re confused. You’ve been under a lot of stress, with the move and the—”
“Mark.”
He stopped.
Maybe it was my voice. I’d never used that voice with him before. Not loud. Not angry. Just very, very clear.
“I’m not going to argue with you,” I said. “I’m not going to explain what I remember or how I feel. The officers have the documents. They have the messages. You can explain it to them.”
For one second, something flickered across his face.
Then the smile came back, a little thinner.
“What messages?”
Officer Hale stepped forward. “Mr. Whitaker, we’ve been provided with text messages between you and Ms. Whitaker’s daughter, and between you and your wife, discussing this property. Including a message where you describe using a lease to force an eviction and pressure Ms. Whitaker into a settlement.”
