My daughter made me a paper tie for father’s day and said, “Wear it to my wedding”—26 years later

I couldn’t stop the tears.

“I know you gave up things you wanted. I know you worked jobs you hated because the bills kept coming. I wish I could hug the younger version of you. I’d tell him his little girl would be okay. I’d tell him he was doing enough, more than enough.

Dad, you spent my whole life walking beside me. And you always will, even when we’re not together.”

I covered my face.

“I know you gave up things you wanted.”

Antonio passed me a tissue.

“She worked on that for weeks,” he whispered.

“Did she know how much I love her?”

His face crumpled.

“Frank, she talked about you constantly. Sometimes, I thought you were the one she was marrying.”

I laughed through my tears.

His face crumpled.

Then I continued.

“There’s one more thing, Dad. Remember how you always said the best thing you ever did was become my dad? Well, Antonio and I have been keeping a secret. Her name is Hayden. And she’s our daughter.”
