And I’m finally using some of my retirement savings to enjoy the life I worked so hard to build.
Occasionally, I think about that Sunday in October.
The beautiful table.
The white linen.
The expensive china.
The five plates.
The refrigerator.
And my son standing silently by the hallway.
For years, I would have blamed myself for leaving.
I would have wondered whether I should’ve stayed, smiled, and eaten whatever was offered.
But now I see it differently.
I didn’t leave because I wasn’t wanted.
I left because I finally understood that I deserved better.
And the next time someone invites me to dinner, I won’t need expensive china, fresh flowers, or a beautifully decorated room.
I won’t even need a special meal.
I’ll simply need a place at the table.
Because family isn’t defined by who prepares the food, pays the bills, or makes everyone else’s life easier.
