Written on the envelope were the words:
“To My Mary.”
With trembling hands, I opened it.
“My dearest,
If you’re reading this letter, it means I’m no longer by your side.
I know you always got upset when I wouldn’t let you prepare breakfast.
But there’s something you never knew.
Twelve years ago, when you were in the hospital, the doctor told me we had to pay very close attention to your nutrition.
That night, I sat beside your hospital bed and made a promise.
If you came home, I would make sure you never woke up hungry again.
I learned how to cook.
At first, I burned everything.
You never knew that during those first few months, I woke up at five every morning so I would have enough time to try several times before you woke up.
Eventually, it became my favorite part of life.
