My 80-Year-Old Husband Made Breakfast for Me Every Morning. After He Died, I Gave Some of the Food to Our Dog One Day. Twenty Minutes Later, the Dog Was Dead. When I Took the Leftovers to a Laboratory, the Doctor Saw the Results, Turned Pale, and Immediately Locked All the Doors…

The doctor pointed to a name printed on the report.

It was a vitamin and mineral mixture sometimes used to help address nutritional deficiencies.

“But that doesn’t explain your dog’s death,” he continued.

I stared at him in confusion.

“Then what does?”

“We also detected xylitol, a sugar substitute. In ordinary dietary amounts, it’s generally safe for humans, but it can be deadly to dogs.”

I froze.

“So my husband wasn’t poisoning me?”

“Our tests haven’t provided evidence of that. But there’s something else I’d like to investigate.”

He pointed to a small label attached to the bottom of the jar.

There was a telephone number written on it.

“Do you recognize this number?”

I shook my head.

The doctor picked up the telephone and called it.
